extVIEW Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

QUESTION: I am running an older version of extVIEW. How do I update to the latest?
ANSWER: Follow the steps below to update your extVIEW installation:
If you are running extVIEW version 2.50 or greater:
  • 1) Stop IIS on your web server to unload the existing extVIEW program files, and to ensure that no users access them during the update process
  • 2) Download EV_260U.ZIP and unzip its contents to the extVIEW program folder on your web server, overwriting the existing extVIEW.DLL file
  • 3) Run UPDATE.BAT from the extVIEW program folder by double-clicking it in Windows® Explorer
  • 4) Restart IIS and access extVIEW as normal via your web browser ... you should see the new version number ("extVIEW 2.60") displayed at the bottom of the main listing page

If you are running an extVIEW version older than 2.50:
  • 1) Stop IIS on your web server to unload the existing extVIEW program files, and to ensure that no users access them during the update process
  • 2) Back-up the existing extVIEW program folder on your web server
  • 3) Uninstall the existing extVIEW version via the Add/Remove Programs control panel
  • 4) Download and install the latest extVIEW demo version
  • 5) Copy your backed-up extVIEW license file to the new extVIEW program folder (this will convert the demo into a licensed version)
  • 6) Modify the new extVIEW configuration files as needed (your old configuration files may not be fully compatible with the new version)
  • 7) Restart IIS and access extVIEW as normal via your web browser
QUESTION: Is it possible to only display users in a specific organizational unit?
ANSWER: Yes. The BaseDN parameter in extVIEW.ini allows you specify a kind of "starting point" for all extVIEW directory queries. Example:

BaseDN=OU=Users,OU=Enterprise,DC=ExtSoft,DC=Local

The above setting instructs extVIEW to only search the Enterprise/Users OU (and all of its sub-OU's) of the ExtSoft.Local domain.

Note that if you specify an invalid path in the BaseDN parameter, extVIEW will produce an error message.

Also note that if the BaseDN parameter is left blank, extVIEW will simply search the entire domain tree/forest.

QUESTION: Can employee photographs be displayed on extVIEW listings?
ANSWER: Yes. Employee pictures can be displayed from two sources:

  • Active Directory's built-in picture attribute (jpegPhoto in Windows 2003, thumbnailPhoto in Windows 2000)

  • The ..\extVIEW\Pics directory on the web server

To display pictures stored in Active Directory, set the UseADPictureAttribute parameter in the extVIEW.ini settings file to Y.

If no picture for a particular user is found in Active Directory (or the UseADPictureAttribute option is turned off), extVIEW will look for a picture file in the ..\extVIEW\Pics directory on the web server.

Pictures not stored in Active Directory must follow the file naming scheme of Username.EXT or FirstnameLastname.EXT, where EXT is either JPG, GIF, PNG, or BMP. Note that the FirstnameLastname.EXT format must be used for Contact objects, since they have no username attribute.

Examples:

  • fredf.JPG (User)
  • FredFlintstone.JPG (User/Contact)
  • BarneyRubble.GIF (User/Contact)

A default picture file (named Default.EXT, where EXT is either JPG, GIF, PNG, or BMP) may be specified for users which do not have their own picture.
